Live/Work

Santa Monica © William Anthony

We're still looking for a place to live. Drove all over the place and put the Garmin through its paces. Today's search took us from the Fashion District downtown to Santa Monica. Not sure if we're going the live/work loft thing, or the beach house thing. It feels like we've looked at a thousand places.

If anyone knows of a great example of either that will take a well-behaved cat, please e-mail me. You'll be VIP at the housewarming party.

Final Destination - Los Angeles, CA

Rescued from the pool. Altadena, CA. © William Anthony

We made it. It's warm and sunny here. Took us seven days. It's actually only a two day drive. But sometimes, it's not about speed but just spreading your wings and taking your time. Something this little guy knows a thing or two about.

Meet Brad. aka "Davey Sprockett" or "Barefoot Brad."

We are in Crescent City, CA at the moment, on our way down the coast to LA. We decided to check out Redwood National Forest today. Specifically Stout Grove about 12 miles from Crescent City. After a great hike amongst a catherdral of trees, we opted to find a local eatery for some lunch. And that we did in the form of She She's Cafe off Hwy 199. While there, we met Brad.

It's hard not to notice Brad. He has a raccoon on his head. Well, a raccoon covered helmet anyway. I approached with the obvious conversation starter of "Is that a raccoon on your head?" (What else? "Hey there buddy, what's on yer mind?")

Brad was a storyteller and we were more than happy to listen. He told us how he had ridden his motorcycle through New Zealand with R.K.* on his head. And how, after nearly being killed by a motor home while crossing a single lane bridge, he wrote this poem:

R.K. Zagged-Wrong
by Davey Sprockett

R.K. Zagged-Wrong and now he's dead
and he's a constant reminder
as he sits on my head.

I can ride from morning til night
And if I don't zag wrong
I'll be alright.

*(R.K. = "Roadkill.)

It was great meeting you (and R.K.) Brad. Ride safe and zag-right buddy.

Best First Assistant. Best Friend. Best Man.

One of the hardest parts about leaving Seattle won't be leaving Lighthouse Coffee, or Paseo's chicken sandwiches, or ending a summer day at Golden Gardens. Nope. Those will all be tough for sure. The toughest will be parting zip codes with my compadre Ryan Schierling.

Since early 2004, we've been friends, carpoolers and confidants. He's been my First Assistant on nearly every shoot including the ones paid for with only lunch. I've been his sous chef and ride to the airport. And vice-versa.

A few, of many, things I've learned from Ryan:

- It's okay to be a "cat guy."
- There's an important difference between grilling and barbecuing.
- A box of Handi Wipes can be as good as a shower.
- Gaff tape makes good impromptu mustaches. (See below.)
- A good woman is hard to find. But great when you find her.
- Cats can walk on ceilings—with encouragement.
- Halloween is the best holiday.
- Hockey isn't just for Canadians.
- Saabs aren't all that ugly.
- George Lucas is a terrible, terrible screenwriter.

I'll surely miss him. I'll miss his quick sense of humor and his knack for making a subject or client laugh. I won't, however, miss his farts in elevators.

Below are other fond memories and light tests...

In addition to being full-time prblem solver and Best Man in my upcoming wedding, Mr. Schierling is an excellent, excellent photographer in his own right. Check out his fantastic work here.

On one of our last shoots, he made me do this and promise:

Architect Magazine - April '08 Issue

My work is featured in the April 2008 issue of Architect Magazine. The cover photo is of Management Consultant Gay Herron photographed at HOK Architects in St. Louis, MO. As mentioned in a previous post, we traveled to eight cities in eleven days to shoot this portrait feature.

All the hard work paid off. The issue looks good.
