City of Sleeping Angels

Detail crop. Click image for full size. © William Anthony

This photo was taken the morning of Trigger Street shoot, as we were setting up atop the 6th St. bridge before the sun rose. In the hi-res version you can see everything from the newly erected Ritz-Carlton at the L.A. Center to the left all the way to the Hollywood sign tucked away just to the left of City Hall. (The triangular roof, far right.)

This wonderful light is almost good enough to get me up earlier in the morning more often.

Almost.

Your life in pink
It goes deeper than you think
It goes deeper than I go
Deeper than you know

An F for freak
And D for dog
Lost in the fog ?
Your life in pink

You know it's never gonna stop
You know it's never gonna end
Your life in pink

Yeah, I'm like a disco ball
Crashing down your head
But somehow I don't fall

To your life you got to sink
To your heart you got to drink
Your life in pink

It's always high and not low
It's always bright and not dull
Your life in pink

Yeah, I'll never let you go
It goes deeper than you know

PDN Photo of the Day

(Click image for full size.) © William Anthony

My image of the Cirque du Soleil tent in Santa Monica was chosen by the editors of Photo District News (PDN) for their Photo of the Day feature.

The image below was another frame taken that evening, but on Ilford 400 black and white film.

Cirque du Santa Monica

(Click image for full size.) © William Anthony

Cirque du Soleil is currently in Santa Monica. The tent is adjacent to the pier, on the North side.

The first time I saw the chapiteau was in 1986, when it suddenly appeared in the parking lot of the old Navy Hospital in Balboa Park in San Diego. I was in high school and my only exposure to the circus was the kind that smelled like elephant poop.

I remember walking up to the tent, nearly 25 years ago, to inspect the odd behemoth. I circled it like it was a beached whale, or an asteroid that just landed in a corn field, trying to figure out what it was and why it was there. At the time, no one had heard of this French circus with an unpronounceable name. It was early in the day, so no one was there yet. Even the ticket trailer was closed. But the price list was in the window. I remember saying out loud, "Fifteen dollars?! For a circus ticket? Yeah... right. Good luck with that here in the U.S."

Last night, I approached a very similar tent again—with the same sense of awe. Music pounded inside the tent as I looked through the ground glass, sea air blowing under the focusing cloth. A show was in progress.

A lot has changed in the years since. Not least of which is the ticket price.

A makeshift memorial has materialized. While there I spoke to Pepper. He said the area's homeless keep the candles lit all night. He was also adamant that the person who did this is not "from here."

The American Dream

(Click image for full size.) © William Anthony

This photograph was not planned. It materialized right before my eyes. Though, I don't think I could have art directed it any better. The mother with 2(.5) kids. Dad pulling up in the minivan and the red "SOLD" sign in the window. The perfectly manicured flora. It's all there.

I grew up in suburbia but I have absolutely no desire to return.

Found this impromptu shrine at the fork at 4th St. & 4th Pl. on the 4th St. Bridge. No name. No photos. Just plastic flowers, candles, photos of Jesus Christ, a cracked coconut in a pile of uncooked rice and, for some reason, fireworks.

The writing on the wall

(Click image for full size.) © William Anthony

Often, I feel like an archeologist in this neighborhood. And the hieroglyphs around here are graffiti. But sometimes the message is loud and clear. This evening, I saw this exchange at Santa Fe and 7th St. I know there is an etiquette in this culture—and disrespect like this is not taken well.

I myself am not fluent in this language. But I do know that some of this work is incredibly beautiful (as I wrote about here), and like all street art, accessible. There are no formal opening nights or wine served in plastic cups. It just appears overnight. Like the rain here in Southern California, you wake up and it's done. And people like me are left to brush away the dust and try and decipher what it all means from afar, after the fact.

But this message is unmistakable. And I look forward to the next chapter.

The Limey on Willow St.

"You tell him I'm f*@&ing cominnnnggggg!" (Click image for full size.) © William Anthony

A neighbor told me one of my favorite motion pictures, The Limey was filmed here at the Biscuit Building. After a few minutes searching on YouTube and one evening on my bike, I discovered that the infamous quadruple murder scene was actually shot at a warehouse on Willow St., not far from here.

I decided to take some newly acquired five-years-past-expiration 4x5 Polaroid film I recently uncovered down to the location to re-shoot it. The look of the Polaroid film just seemed to fit the tone of the scene.

And here's that scene. (NSFW: Language, Violence, Terence Stampitude.)

It's a great flick. I watched it for the first time as a second-run art film in an empty La Paloma theater in Encinitas, CA circa '99. In addition to excellent casting and a hallmark performance by Terence Stamp, Steven Soderbergh's use of washed out colors, disjointed timeline and beautiful lens blooming in the dream sequences make this one of my top 10.
